What is the Future of No Child Left Behind?

More than 300 students, alumni, educators, and community leaders from across Maryland attended the School of Education's (SOE) 100th anniversary celebration on December 7, 2009, to hear a panel of leading policy makers and Johns Hopkins researchers discuss next year's reauthorization by Congress of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, renamed in 2001 as the No Child Left Behind law.

Panel members included Martha Kanter, Under Secretary of Education for the U.S. Department of Education; Nancy Grasmick, Maryland State Superintendent of Schools; and Andres Alonso, Baltimore City Schools CEO. Researchers from Johns Hopkins included James McPartland, director of the Center for Social Organization of Schools; Robert Slavin, director of SOE's Center for Research and Reform in Education; and Mariale Hardiman, chair of the SOE's Department of Interdisciplinary Studies.
